Rosemarie Särkän näyttely Vihreällä niityllä on monellakin tapaa kunnianosoitus hänen isovanhemmilleen ja vanhoille ihmisillle, joita päivittäisessä kuvakulttuurissa on harvoin nähtävillä. Särkkä on kuvannut isovanhempiaan viimeisen viiden vuoden aikana heidän kotipaikassaan Hyvinkään Paavolassa. Särkkä käsittelee sarjassaan vanhenemista yleisellä tasolla yksityisen kautta.
“Olen elänyt mummoni ja vaarini kanssa arkea. Kamera on kulkenut niin marjametsässä kuin saunassakin. Projektini on ollut vuorovaikutteinen. Olemme suunnitelleet yhdessä kuvauspaikkoja ja vaarini on myös kuvannut. Näitä kuvia on mukana näyttelyssä. Vaarini kunto heikkeni nopeasti hänen viimeisenä elinvuotenaan. Tunne lähestyvästä kuolemasta vahvisti suhdettamme. Kuvasin vaariani sairaalassa lähellä kuoleman hetkeä, ja sen jälkeen. Olen kuvannut luonnollisen kuoleman, johon ei liity väkivaltaa.”
“Kuvasarjani kertoo myös tarinaa suhteestani isovanhempiini. Olen saanut olla lähellä heitä ja he ovat aina antaneet minulle aikaansa.”
Särkkä on julkaissut sarjasta valokuvakuvakirjan Mummo ja Vaari, joka ilmestyi Lokakuussa 2005 Maahenki kustantamolta.

Rosemarie Särkkä’ exhibition is homage in more ways than one to her grandparents and elderly people in general who are rarely portrayed in visual culture today. For the past five years Särkkä has photographed her grandparents in their home and its surroundings. This series of photographs deals with the process of aging and getting old universally through an individual experience.
“I have lived the everyday life of my grandmother and grandfather. My camera has followed us from plucking berries in the forest to the benches of the sauna. It has been an interactive process. We have decided the places to shoot together and my grandfather has also taken some of the photographs seen in this exhibition. My grandfather got rapidly worse during the last year of his life. The feeling of approaching death brought us closer. I photographed my grandfather in the hospital when death approached, and afterwards. I have photographed a natural death without the presence of violence.”
“My photograph series is also a portrayal of my relationship with my grandparents. I have been able to be near them and they have granted me with their time.”
