Celine Clanet- Maze

” Between 2005 and 2009 I travelled regularly to Máze, a small Sami village located at the highest point of the European map, far above the Arctic Circle, in Norwegian Lapland. There I met quiet people, sometimes melancholic, captivating, and very proud of their village and territory, of these landscapes they are constantly gazing at with binoculars they never separate from, even at home.

I have pictured people, houses, land and reindeer that should not be here today, flooded with waters of a hydroelectric dam project that Norwegian government planned in early 70’s, and was fortunately aborted thanks to Sami people’s protests and resistance.  I have also pictured a reality that will undoubtedly transform in the coming century, due to global warming and cultural integration.

To me Máze is an ambivalent symbol of resistance and helplessness.

Pride as well as suspicion, solitude and great beauty prevail there. In the most beautiful tundra of Arctic region, I tasted Ante’s and Ole Ailo’s favourite season, when days get longer and temperatures become milder. The perfect moment, when time doesn’t exist anymore and night is gone, when they immerse themselves in their favourite activities: fishing through ice holes in Lake Suolojávri, or riding snoskoter in the tundra. And all these hours spent with friends, family, outside on a reindeer skin, in a hytte or under lávvu, talking, joiking, or lying down doling nothing, saying nothing. Just being.”  Céline Clanet

Ranskalainen valokuvaaja Cèline Clanet (1977) asuu ja työskentelee Pariisissa freelance valokuvaajana ja graafisena suunnittelijana. Hän valmistui valokuvaajaksi 1999 Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie of Arle’sta. Hänellä on ollut useita näyttelyitä Euroopassa, mutta myös Yhdysvalloissa ja Kiinassa.  Hän on myös voittanut useita arvostettuja valokuva-alan kilpailuja.  Mm. vuonna 2009 Clanet voitti ensimmäisen palkinnon ”People-Culture” International Photography Awards/Lucie Awards, USAssa.

Vuodesta 2005 lähtien Celiné Clanet on useaan otteeseen vieraillut Norjan Lapissa sijaitsevassa Mázen saamelaiskylässä. Kylässä hän on tutustunut ihmisiin, jotka ovat ylpeitä kylästään ja maisemastaan, jota he lakkaamatta tarkastelevat kiikareillaan.  Clanet on kuvannut taloja ja maisemia, jotka olivat jäädä -70-luvulla Norjan valtion suunnittelemien vesivoimaloiden altaiden alle, mutta jotka saamelaisten protestien ja vastarinnan vuoksi pelastuivat. Laajemmin Clanet’n taiteellisen työskentelyn teemana on muistin, identiteetin ja maiseman väliset suhteet ja yhteydet.
