Juha Suonpää is giving a lecture on Friday 2nd of December at 16:00 – 17:30 at the Studio, Cultural House Valve, Hallituskatu 7, Oulu. The lecture is connected to the exhibition Holy Melancholy, which will be opened on Friday 2nd of December at 18:00 at Northern Photographic Centre, Rantagalleria.

Both the lecture and the exhibtion are analyzing national Finnish stereotypes and the canonized fine art phtographic expressions. The lecture in based on Suonpää’s newly published book “Valokuva on IN” (Photography is IN). The book opens up the process of internationalization of Finnish Photography by analyzing the expert discourse and the estethetics of Finnish contemporary Photography – The Helsinki School.

Nordic Photography event in Oulu – a preproject

Nordic Cultre Point – Kulturkontakt Nord has awarded to Northern Photographic Centre a pre-project funding of 12.700 € from the Culture and Art Programme to develope a Nordic Photography Event.

The project is organized in co-operation with Centrum för Fotografi, intendent Gunilla Muhr, Stockholm, Sweden, Fotogalleriet, curator Stephanie von Spreter, Olso, Norway and Galleri Image, curator Beate Cegielska, Aarhus, Denmark. Director and curator of Northern Photographic Centre Alla Räisänen is coordinating the co-opreation.

During 2012 four workshops are organized in Oulu, Aarhus, Oslo and Stockholm. During the workshops the curators are developing a concept and structure of the Nordic Photography Event. In connection to the Phoptography Event a Nordic residence program is developed.

The first meeting of the pre-project is organized in Oulu spring 2012. The first Nordic Photography Event will be in Oulu 2013 at Lasaretinväylä Art Hall.

Exhibition program for 2012

The board of directors of Northern Photographic Centre met on Thursday 6^th of October to select the exhibition program for 2012.

58 applications, both from national and international artists, arrived before the deadline in September 30th.
